The horse is a formidable creature—majestic, strong, and noble. Throughout history, it has been a symbol of royalty and power, often used in warfare as the image of a fearless warrior charging into battle without hesitation.

The butterfly, in contrast, is a picture of transformation. Its journey through metamorphosis—a complete change in form and appearance—teaches us about spiritual renewal. What begins as a crawling caterpillar is transfigured into something entirely new: delicate, radiant, and free.

The New Oxford American Dictionary defines transformation as “a thorough or dramatic change in the form, appearance, or character of.” This is exactly what God is working in us. Through life’s trials, hardships, and the shaping of His Spirit, we are being transformed—from lowly worms into beautiful butterflies, and even into bold warrior-horses—by the power of the Holy Spirit and the finished work of Christ on the Cross.

Scripture speaks clearly of this process:
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:2)

“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. This comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18)

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

This transformation requires a personal metamorphosis: leaving behind slavery to sin and the desires of the flesh in order to live as sons and daughters of God.
The process often begins in hiddenness—like the caterpillar inside its cocoon. It is a season of darkness, solitude, and surrender, where no one else can see what God is doing. This “cocoon stage” takes place in the mind and heart, under the quiet, powerful work of the Holy Spirit. To emerge as a butterfly, the caterpillar must give up its former life. It must “die to self,” be set apart, and rest in the Lord. Only then can the Spirit bring forth the transformation that God has promised: “That which I have spoken to you, I will perform.”
