This painting was inspired by a photograph my daughter, Danielle Jordaan, captured during her nine-month stay in Israel in 2018. Danielle has always loved sunflowers, while I have a deep affection for feathers. When I first saw her photo, I was struck by how beautifully both these elements appeared together—two symbols, each meaningful to us in different ways, yet united in one image. It immediately felt like a special connection—a gentle reminder of how God weaves our hearts and stories together through His creation. Sunflowers are rich in symbolism. They represent adoration, loyalty, and longevity, but their meaning goes even deeper. The sunflower’s natural behavior—turning its face toward the sun throughout the day—reflects beauty, joy, and unwavering faith. Spiritually, this mirrors our walk with Yeshua (Jesus). Just as the sunflower continually seeks the light of the sun, we too are called to turn our hearts toward the Son of God, following Him wherever He leads. Where He moves, we move; where He shines, we receive life. The yellow of the sunflower speaks of God’s glorious presence, radiating warmth and divine light. The green of the stem and leaves points to life and renewal—a reminder that true life, abundant and eternal, can only be found in Him. The feather carries its own sacred meaning. Throughout Scripture, feathers are symbols of God’s protection, covering, and presence—a tender image of His care. As Psalm 91:4 says, “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge.” The feather in this image, then, is a quiet assurance that He is always with us, sheltering and guiding us with love. Together, the sunflower and the feather tell a story of faith and intimacy with God—of looking to Him for light and life, and resting in the shelter of His wings. |
